Honda, Toyota Tops When It Comes To Resale

American Autos Shut Out Of Kelley Blue Book's Top 10

Updated: 9:38 am EST November 20, 2008

If you are concerned with getting the most back when it comes time to sell your vehicle, you might want to look to a Japanese import.

That's at least according to Kelley Blue Book, which heaped praise on both Honda and Toyota in releasing its annual Best Resale Value Awards rankings Tuesday.

Honda took top honors in the report, earning "Best Brand" ranking for the second time in four years.

"The importance of quality is magnified in the eyes of a used car buyer, and Honda's reputation for delivering well-built, reliable, dependable automobiles is well earned and well known," Kelley Blue Book said. "Fuel efficiency is another Honda hallmark, and another attribute likely to get greater attention from buyers seeking added value in the used car market."

Meanwhile, the overall top-10 ranking featured six of Toyota's vehicles, including three from its Scion brand, in the top 10.

Two Honda vehicles, its Civic/Civic Hybrid and the Toyota Fit, made the top-10 list.

German automakers claimed the last two spots in the top 10 in the Volkswagen Rabbit and BMW's MINI Cooper.

The list wasn't favorable to American vehicles, with no vehicles produced by U.S. automakers cracking the top 10 list and only three overall making the list's "best in category" rankings.

Toyota scored big again in the category rankings, with four vehicles topping their categories: Lexus IS (mid-size car), Toyota Tacoma (compact pickup), Toyota Tundra (full-size pickup) and Toyota Highlander Hybrid (hybrid crossover).

Honda had three cars named best in category: the Honda Civic Hybrid for best hybrid car, the Honda CR-V for best crossover and the Honda Odyssey for best van.

"This has been the year of Honda in the United States," said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book's Web site. "With a high-quality, highly regarded product line perfectly aligned with the new realities of the American market, Honda has scored big in new-vehicle sales while burnishing its already sterling reputation for strong resale value."
