CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -- Deputies who were checking out a report of a stolen electric transformer stumbled upon what they believe is the warehouse of a serial thief. Officials are asking for help in linking hundreds of stolen items with their rightful owners. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office now has its own hardware and tool store. "We're talking about over 200 items were recovered at this man's residence," said Sgt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.Authorities said they found the items during a raid on a rural home, where an investigation about a stolen power transformer led to the huge storage shed.SLIDESHOW: 200 Stolen Items Discovered
"Things didn't quite seem right. They spoke to the suspect at the residence, ended up writing a search warrant for property, came back and located quite a bit of stolen property," said Baker.Police arrested Christopher James Antkowiak, 34, and charged him with five counts of receiving stolen property.Baker said they would like nothing better than to return all the items to the rightful owners but they don't know where everything came from and they don't know how many charges they should file.
From the small to the big, there are hundreds of expensive power tools, including nearly a dozen boxes marked "Habitat For Humanity." Police also seized three cars, a couple of ATVs, a welder and a huge tree company chipper."The vehicles have been returned to their owners. At this time, that's the only victims who have received their property back," said Baker.
