There are seemingly endless options when it comes to getting a bird cage. About.com compiled a list of simple guidelines to make choosing the perfect one easier.

  • First decide where you will put the bird cage, then shop based on the area you set aside. Be sure these areas are away from windows and drafts.
  • Get the right size for your bird. According to about.com, the cage should be big enough for your bird to walk around comfortably and fully extend and flap her wings. Remember that some space will be taken up by perches, food bowls and toys.
  • Be sure to check out bar spacing. Some birds can get out easier than you might think, and require no more than a half inch space.
  • Some veterinarians say round cages can be detrimental to a birds' psychological health, so angled cages are preferable. Be sure the cage appears sturdy and solid. The best cages are made of stainless steel, which is non-toxic, easy to clean and will not chip.

About.com reports "a properly designed bird cage normally gives bird and owner many years of use and enjoyment. You should remember that your bird will spend a great deal of time in his cage, and much like us, will appreciate some decorations to look at! Fill your bird's cage with colorful toys, perches, and accessories to ensure that he is well entertained. With a little planning and careful decision making, you should be able to choose a cage that will meet all your expectations while providing your bird a safe, sturdy, and secure living space. "
