Beyond The Grave: Stories From Oakland Cemetery

Tuesday, March 25, 2008 – updated: 4:47 pm EDT April 15, 2008

Channel 2’s John Pruitt hosted a special program highlighting Atlanta’s Oakland Cemetery, a historic landmark set in the heart of the city.

This Atlanta jewel encompasses so much of the city’s early history. Pruitt explored the fascinating stories of the people buried in this sacred place. From international celebrities, author Margaret Mitchell to golfer Bobby Jones, this final resting place is a Who’s Who of Atlanta history. Plus, viewers got a peek inside the mausoleums of local millionaires.

You won’t only find millionaires and celebrities here, more than half of Atlanta’s mayors are also buried at Oakland, including former mayor Maynard Jackson. Jackson’s widow tells Pruitt how she continues to pay tribute to her late husband every week.

The great stories don’t stop there. There are also many unanswered questions at Oakland. Pruitt revealed several mysteries that no one can unravel. A 25-foot spire that has simply disappeared and the mystery behind the one woman buried in the Confederate cemetery, plus many more.

In early March of 2008, this historic cemetery took a direct hit from the Atlanta tornado. Dozens of trees and monuments were destroyed. Pruitt revealed to viewers why there’s so much at stake to repair the cemetery quickly.
