Favre Will Reportedly Attend Packers Camp

Green Bay Training Camp Opens Monday

Friday, July 25, 2008 – updated: 12:49 pm EDT July 25, 2008

Brett Favre told Packers' General Manager Ted Thompson he will show up to Packers training camp when it starts next week, NFL.com's Adam Schefter reported.

Schefter also reported that Favre could send a letter to the NFL as early as Friday seeking reinstatement. Schefter reported that all signs point to Favre spending this year with the Packers, although he could decide to retire or the Packers could trade him.

Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook, was not immediately available for comment.

A Green Bay Packers spokesman told Milwaukee television station WISN, "We are aware of the (NFL Network) report, and we're looking into it."

The Packers begin practice Monday at 8:45 a.m.

There have been many reports that the Packers have been talking with teams about potentially trading Favre, but that is strictly speculation at this time. ESPN reported Friday the the Jets and Buccaneers have expressed interest in the quarterback.

Packers' President Mark Murphy fielded questions Thursday at the annual shareholders meeting about Favre.

"I think we're all trying to do what's right," said Murphy. "We want to be fair to Brett, number one, for what he has meant to the organization, but we also are looking out for the long-term best interests of the organization. I think that is the balancing act."

Murphy also said Thursday the team might have to reschedule the Sept. 8 ceremony during which Favre's jersey was going to be retired.

But Murphy said any delay would only be temporary.

"We're going to retire Brett's number at some point," Murphy said. "Regardless of whether it's this year, it'll be sometime in the future. We'll wait and see, but I think it's still enough up in the air that we want to wait and see how things play out."

The three-time MVP asked to be released from his contract earlier this month after his sudden desire to unretire was met with lukewarm enthusiasm from the Packers, who committed to moving forward after Favre said a tearful goodbye in March. The Packers have said they have no plans to release Favre -- they hold his rights until his contract expires after the 2010 season -- but haven't commented publicly on a potential trade.

Murphy did, however, hint at the possibility of Favre playing for another team by conjuring the imagine of Joe Montana in a Kansas City Chiefs uniform on Thursday.

"We want to have positive feelings about Brett and the Packers, and we want him to continue to be a part of the Packer family," Murphy said. "I think the way this is handled will be important in terms of how that plays out in the future. But I'm also cognizant of some of the things that have happened in the past with Joe Montana ending his career with the Chiefs, now you look back on it, most people might not remember that he played with the Chiefs. They remember he was a 49er."
