Friday, July 25, 2008
Philadelphia, PA -- (Sports Network) - Jair Jurrjens tossed eight shutout innings and Brian McCann's fifth career grand slam highlighted a seven-run ninth inning, as the Atlanta Braves snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Philadelphia Phillies with an 8-2 win in the opener of the three-game set at Citizens Bank Park.Jurrjens (10-5) gave up three hits, walked one and struck out six for Atlanta, which has won three of its last four. McCann added a solo home run, while Kelly Johnson finished 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Gregor Blanco and Jeff Francoeur each had two hits and scored a run. Atlanta was without All-Star third baseman Chipper Jones, who sat out with a strained left hamstring. Kyle Kendrick (8-5) gave up one run and scattered seven hits over six innings to take the loss for Philadelphia, which fell into a tie with Florida for second place in the cluttered NL East standings. Both teams trail division- leading New York by two games. Brad Lidge surrendered five runs in the ninth and did not retire a batter. Ryan Howard clubbed his major league-leading 30th home run of the season -- a two-run blast -- for the stumbling Phillies, who have dropped three straight and five of their last six contests. Nursing a 1-0 lead, 12 Braves went to bat in the top of the ninth inning as they broke the contest wide open. Lidge started the frame for Philadelphia and promptly served up a leadoff double to pinch-hitter Greg Norton. Blanco then reached on a bunt single and Yunel Escobar walked to load the bases for Mark Teixeira, who stroked an RBI single before McCann launched a 1-2 fastball to the seats in right. Clay Condrey was summoned from the bullpen and got Mark Kotsay to pop out, stopping the assault momentarily. Consecutive doubles from Francoeur and Johnson brought in another run. Johnson then advanced to third on an Omar Infante single and came around to score on a Norton groundout. After Blanco drew a walk, Escobar grounded out to end the inning. With two away in the bottom half, Chase Utley singled off Will Ohman to prolong the game and Howard followed with a shot to left to join Hall of Famers Chuck Klein and Mike Schmidt as the only Phillies to hit 30 or more home runs in at least three consecutive seasons. Klein hit 30-plus HR in four straight seasons (1929-32) and Schmidt had two streaks: four straight (1974-77) and nine straight (1979-87). After the Phillies stranded a runner on third in the first, Kendrick worked out of a bases-loaded jam in top half of the second. With a runner on first and two outs, Johnson stared at four straight pitches out of the strike zone and Infante followed with a comebacker off the glove of Kendrick that resulted in an infield single. The right-hander then retired his counterpart to end the threat. The Braves opened the scoring in the fourth on McCann's home run, a leadoff blast to straight-away center. Atlanta left the bags full in the fifth, and had traffic on the basepaths in the sixth, but were unable to score. Game Notes Jurrjens leads all MLB rookies in wins...McCann registered his fourth career multi-homer game and the five RBI matched his career-high...Kendrick has pitched six or more innings in six of his last eight starts...The Braves left 12 men on base, while Philadelphia stranded three...Atlanta's Mike Hampton will start Saturday's game, making his first MLB appearance since August 19, 2005. He will oppose Philadelphia's Cole Hamels.
