ATLANTA -- This week a 3 year-old toddler died after shooting himself with his father's gun.

Ironically, his father was a police officer.

Two months ago another 3 year-old apparently shot and killed himself after finding a relative's gun.

And a week before that another 3 year-old shot and killed his 5 year old sister after finding his parent's loaded gun under a mattress.

Three kids dead out of sheer curiosity and all of it could have been avoided.

These stories cry out for a closer look at gun safety in Georgia.

Even if you don't own a gun and don't want your children to have guns.

Teach them never to pick up a gun or play with a gun.

If they come across a gun to tell an adult immediately.

Treat all guns as if they were loaded.

17 states have what are called safe storage laws or Child Access Prevention or "CAP" laws.

These laws encourage gun-owning families to store their guns in a way that protects their children from accidentally shooting themselves or others.

It would also make adults criminally liable for violating such laws.

In some states evidence shows that accidental deaths have gone down since these laws were passed.

Georgia has no such laws, but it should ....before any more of our children are found, accidentally, dead.
