Thursday, February 28, 2008

Anissa Centers is an award-winning journalist who has spent the last 11 years in Mobile, Alabama as the co-anchor of the 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. newscasts at WALA-TV. During her time there, she covered every major hurricane to hit the U.S. Gulf Coast in the last decade. Her coverage of Hurricane Katrina helped her earn the Alabama Associated Press ‘Best Anchor’ award for the third year in a row. In 2004, The National Association of Black Journalists named her best anchor in Region IV, which spans several states, including Georgia. She won that award for NABJ's Region III in 2006. The Alabama Broadcasters Association recently honor ed Anissa in the Anchor category as "Alabama's Best in Broadcasting".

In 2003, the Mobile Press Club recognized her reporting for a series of reports on Sickle Cell Disease. Those stories lead to her becoming a bone marrow donor for a 2-year old Leukemia patient and sponsoring some of the most successful bone marrow registration drives in Alabama’s history. In 2006, she won the Mobile Press Club's 'In-Depth Reporting' award for a series of stories on the 10-year anniversary of the death of Michael Figures, a lawyer and politician who worked on the lawsuit that bankrupted the Ku Klux Klan.

Her diverse career assignments range from interviewing President George W. Bush in a one room school house in Texas before he won his first term as Texas' governor to talking with First Lady Laura Bush about the role reading played in helping children cope with the tragedy of 9-11.

She's the founder of 'Get Your Piece of the Pie.' She taught the program to elementary school students in the Mobile County School System. It teaches young people the power and importance of being able to speak standard English, in a manner which empowers them to achieve any dream they imagine for themselves. Her favorite part of having such a visible career is the opportunities it provides to do public speaking engagements, especially motivational speaking at churches, schools and other civic events. Anissa is married to her high school sweet heart, Reggie Centers. Together they have 3 children. Anissa was born and raised in Longview, Texas. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Austin College in Sherman, Texas with degrees in Business and Communications. Anissa started her television career in her home state by working in Waco and Nacogdoches.
