Get Your Severe Weather Radio

POSTED: 3:34 pm EST January 25, 2008
UPDATED: 10:05 am EST February 18, 2008

The severe weather which put much of the area under Tornado Warnings on Sunday, February 17, was the second major bout of storms striking the North Georgia area since the annual recognition of severe weather week in Georgia began.

It’s not just a coincidence. The state of Georgia programmed the recognition week starting February 4 to increase Georgian’s education of the dangerous times sparked during this period of the year.

It’s also why Severe Weather Team 2 teamed up with Midland Radio and Kroger to offer affordable, quality severe weather radios. The all-hazard alert radios normally sell for $49.95. The Channel 2 promotion reduced the prices to $29.99 at any metro Atlanta Kroger. Look for the display featuring Severe Weather Team 2’s Glenn Burns, David Chandley, Karen Minton and Brad Nitz.

"We’re always going to be there for our viewers, tracking the storms as they hit Georgia, but there’s nothing like having an alarm programmed for your own county," said Glenn Burns, chief meteorologist for Severe Weather Team 2. "When tornadoes threaten, it gives a voice, siren, or tone alert, so, even in the middle of the night you’ll know when to take cover and get your family out of harm’s way," he continued.

Kimberly Gifaldi of Powder Springs bought one of the radios shortly after they went on sale.

"I dragged my husband down to Kroger and bought that radio and came home and set it up," she wrote in an e-mail to WSB-TV Channel 2. "We have a hard time hearing the siren from outside when the windows in our house are closed."

"Today (Sunday) with the bad weather, the warning alarm sounded loud and clear and we listened to the weather updated even as our satellite went out," she added. "(It) makes me feel a little bit safer and more aware; especially now at late night. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you."
